German car manufacturer BMW have announced that they will produce entirely electric versions of their X1 and 5 Series models. This joins their growing fleet of electric cars that include the iNext, i4 and 7 Series models, showing their commitment to electric vehicles and sustainability.
At present the company haven’t announced specs or release dates for the new electric car models. BMW are aspiring to have over seven million electric cars on the road over the coming decade, with a hope that over two thirds will be fully electric models.
In keeping with their sustainability goals, where BMW aim to be a leader in the field, their aim is to have five completely emission-free models by the end of 2021. These include the Mini Cooper SE, i3, iX3, i4 and the series version of the iNext. The company are also scrutinising all aspects of the car making process including recycling, second-life usage of batteries, tracking raw materials like cobalt, and emissions from hybrids, right through to the efficiency of the factories where their cars are built.
BMW CEO, Oliver Zipse, said: “CO2 must be reduced in partnership between manufacturers and suppliers. If you want to convince partners, you must act as a role model. As a leader in sustainability, what we say counts a great deal with our suppliers – so we leverage our reputation in this respect. Our aim is to ensure the most sustainable supply chain in the entire industry.”
