The British motorcar brand has seen sales of electric vehicles climb rapidly over the last year. MG, who are part of China’s SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, believes the popularity and massive rise in electric car adoption will result in around half of its car sales for 2021 being electric.

During September 2020 MG saw traditional combustion engine car sales crash to their lowest level in the last 21 years while electric vehicle sales rose. The rise of electric cars sales has played a big part in MG opening more dealerships to cope with their growing popularity.

During March, 2021 30.5 per cent of MG’s sale were clean all-electric cars. This is an impressive figure against an overall market penetration of 7.7 per cent for BEVs across all brands. In total, MG achieved a BEV market share of 5.5 per cent ahead of a number of high-volume established brands.

Guy Pigounakis, MG’s Commercial Director, said: “It shows how rapidly engaged the car buying public are becoming in the MG brand. We continue to innovate and offer great value, high tech and pioneering new cars and demonstrate our leadership in affordable electric vehicles. It’s an astonishing result and one that underlines our commitment to continued growth.

“As our dealerships reopen and welcome back customers from next week, we’re positioned to really capitalise on the increasing demand for EVs and for great value, high quality cars.”

MG currently offers three plug-in models in the UK including the award winning MG ZS EV, the All New MG5 EV and MG HS Plug-in.
