The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI – Bundesministerium für Verkehr und digitale Infrastruktur) is allocating €500 million until the end of 2025 for the further development of the public charging infrastructure in Germany.
The goal is to establish a total of at least 50,000 charging points, which includes at least 20,000 fast charging points. In the first funding call, funding will be available for around 9,000 publicly accessible charging points with a maximum charging capacity of up to 22 kilowatts (normal charging points).
Up to 60 percent of the eligible costs can receive funding. All supported charging points must be publicly accessible and powered by electricity from renewable sources.
In the first round of the federal charging infrastructure funding guideline for electric vehicles, €300 million were available from 2017 to 2020. Around 30,0000 public charging points were approved. Almost 13,000 of these have already been installed, including around 2,000 fast charging points.
In parallel to the new funding guideline, the BMVI is supporting the development of the charging infrastructure with funding programmes for on-site charging infrastructure and the purchase and installation of private wallboxes.
In addition, the tendering procedure for the Deutschlandnetz (German network) with 1000 fast-charging locations will commence shortly. This is positive for electric vehicle motorists in Germany and will help to continue the switch zero-emissions driving.
Andreas Scheuer, federal minister, said: “Charging must become the new refuelling. People should be able to charge their electric cars anywhere and at any time. This is the only way to achieve a breakthrough in electric mobility in Germany.
“Currently, our funding is directly responsible for more than one in four public charging points. With €500 million and our new funding programme, we are now going one step further. With an initial €190 million, we are supporting the establishment of around 18,000 additional public charging points.
This is a continuation of our successful predecessor programme, with which almost 30,000 new charging points have already been completed. Further funding calls will follow this year.”
Johannes Pallasch, National Centre for Charging Infrastructure at NOW GmbH, said: “This funding programme addresses all relevant scenarios with regard to publicly accessible charging infrastructure: intermediate charging, for example in customer car parks or at the roadside, as well as fast charging at axes or fast charging stations in towns.
“A special focus is therefore on supporting the establishment of fast-charging points. This is how we will meet the continuing high registration figures for e-vehicles now and in the future.”
