Hyundai has won the Manufacturer of the Year title at the Electric Vehicle Innovation and Excellence (EVIE) award ceremony, which was an event dedicated to all things relating to electric mobility. The South Korean manufacturer fought off tough competition from Nissan and the PSA Group, which includes Citroen, DS, Peugeot and Vauxhall.

The judges at the inaugural event praised Hyundai for its range of electrified options that include both plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars. Currently, Hyundai’s all-electric zero-emission cars include the Kona Electric sports utility vehicle, which has an impressive 300 mile (483km) range and starts at £30,150, and their Ioniq Electric saloon that has a 193 mile (311km) range and starts at £30,950.

Hyundai says that by the end of 2020 three-quarters of its range will be electrified in some way. The brand has sold 18,000 electrified cars already in the UK this year, with 7,000 of being zero-emission all-electric cars.

Liam Stoker, head judge at the EVIEs, said: “Hyundai stood out from other nominees this year due to the company’s commitment to providing products to meet all needs, and our judging panel felt the addition of the Kona and IONIQ vehicles, in particular, had been game-changing for the UK electric vehicle market. We congratulate Hyundai UK on a thoroughly deserved award.”

Ashley Andrew, managing director of Hyundai Motor UK, said: “This award is testament to our company’s commitment to clean mobility now and in the future and to ensure the greatest level of choice for our customers.”

“Our award-winning Kona and IONIQ ranges have attracted many new customers to our brand, and there is much more to come with the launch next year of our new IONIQ brand heralding our next-generation electric vehicles.”
