MG Motors launch new MG5 electric car

MG Motors, who are based in the UK, have announced the launch of their new MG5 electric car. The new all-electric MG5 will be available in two models: the MG5 Excite and the MG5 Exclusive. The MG5 Excite will retail for £24,495 after the plug-in car grant, while the Exclusive, which features a more expensive trim, comes in at £26,995.

Both models of the MG5 use the same running gear and batteries. MG have fitted a 52.5 kWh battery that is located under the seats. This drives a 115kW motor and offers up to 214 miles (344km) of range. They will also be able to charge to around 80 percent capacity in 50 minutes from 50kW charging point.

The range of the MG5 is a big plus, especially when compared to the company’s popular MG ZS EV sports utility vehicle, which has a range of 163-mile (262km). MG say that the combination of the larger battery and more aerodynamic body shape are big contributors to this.

The family sized estate car will easily seat five adults. It also features 578 litres of boot space which increases to 1456 litres with the back seats folded down. In the cockpit it feels modern with an eight-inch touchscreen, air conditioning and a 3D sound system with four USB ports. It also features rain sensing windscreen wipers and has an electric handbrake for parking.

All combined it’s an impressive package for a family sized vehicle, especially when the base model comes in under £25,000. There aren’t many cars of this size and spec hitting this price point. The new MG5 will be available from October, 2020.
