Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, to address 2020 EV Summit
Transport secretary to deliver keynote speech on the future of electric cars and emobility in the UK
The Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, will make a keynote speech on the UK government’s position regarding emobility at the 2020 EV Summit taking place online on the 15-16 December. The EV Summit brings together the world’s leading experts on emobility and Shapps will address the summit regarding the government’s plans for the future of transport and sustainability.
The EV Summit, which is the world’s leading electric car and mobility summit, returns for a third year after two hugely successful events in 2018 and 2019. The event is delivered by digital agency Green.TV, who are a world-leading sustainability multi-media company. Throughout lockdown Green.TV worked with government departments and lead transport organisations including BVRLA, the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership and the Energy Savings Trust, to master online events.
Grant Shapps, Secretary of State for Transport, said: “As we look to the future, the UK will clearly benefit from our decision last month to end sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. By setting the bar high for the introduction of electric vehicles, we’re putting ourselves in pole position to reap success in the zero-emission era.
“Not only will our air will be cleaner, our children healthier, our contribution to climate change substantially diminished and our economy stronger too, with UK based manufacturers and suppliers spearheading a green motoring revolution.
"We’ve already committed £1.5 billion to support early-market and remove barriers to zero-emission vehicle ownership, but alongside the new phase-out date, we’ve pledged a further £2.8 billion to help industry, and consumers make the switch. With up to £1 billion to support the electrification of UK vehicles and their supply chains, £1.3 billion to accelerate the roll-out of charging infrastructure, and a further £582 million for plug-in vehicle grants.
"This transformational funding will make us a frontrunner in electric car technology and production, globally, and it will incentivise many thousands more customers to choose a plug-in vehicle as their next car, and it will give us one of the most comprehensive charging networks in the world including rapid charging hubs at every service station on England’s motorways and A-roads. That means by the time you have had a cup of tea or coffee your vehicle will be fully charged.
"And, as host and president of COP26, the UN climate summit in Glasgow next November, the international community will expect us to show leadership on climate change."
Ade Thomas, Founder of Green.TV, the company behind the EV Summit, said: “We are delighted to welcome Grant Shapps to speak at the 2020 EV Summit. With our digital platform and consequential global audience, the EV Summit will be the ideal platform to communicate the UK government’s leadership in the accelerated transition to a sustainable transport near future, with electric vehicles at the centre of that.”
