The waiting is finally over and Volkswagen have officially launched their new sleeking looking ID.4, which is their first all-electric SUV. As many expected the ID.4 has some similarities to the Volkswagen Group’s Skoda Enyaq iV, and like their recently launched VW ID.3 hatchback, uses Volkswagen’s interchangeable MEB electric car platform. This makes for an efficient system that the group will use across its electric models, which ultimately helps to keep prices down.
Volkswagen have fitted a 77 kWh battery to this 1st Edition model. This is mounted under the floor and drives the rear wheels only. A more powerful four-wheel-drive model is also on the way according to Volkswagen.
The 77 kWh battery in the 1st Edition ID.4 delivers 201bhp which offers an impressive 323 miles (520km) of range from a full charge. For comparison Elon Musk’s Tesla Model 3 offers 329 miles (530km) of range in performance mode and 348 miles (560km) in long range mode.
The ID.4 drives from 0-62mph (0-100kph) in 8.5 seconds with a top speed of 100mph (161kph). It can be charged to around 200 miles (322km) of range in just 30 minutes when using a 125kW fast charger.
This family sized electric car measures 4,584mm long, 1,852mm wide and 1,612mm high. This easily seats five adults and it comes with 543 litres of boot space. This space is roughly tripled with the seats are folded. The ID.4 is a similar size to Volkswagen’s Tigua by way of comparison.
Volkswagen’s new ID.4 will be available later this year in the UK. As yet UK prices for the ‘1st Edition’ model haven’t been released but in Germany it’s priced at €49,950, so we’re guessing it will be around £45,000 – £46,000.
